Frequently asked questions

How does a purpose-bound car loan differ from a general-purpose instalment loan?

A purpose-bound car loan is intended for buying a vehicle and may require proof or security. A general-purpose instalment loan gives you more freedom in how you use it. Besides the cost, compare which documents and security the specific bank asks for.

Which running costs of a car do I need to plan for alongside the loan repayment?

Allow for insurance, vehicle tax, fuel or charging electricity, servicing and a repair reserve. Parking costs may come on top. The repayment should only be paid from the budget that remains after these costs and your general household reserve.

Bank loan or dealer finance — which is cheaper?

That can only be answered with the same vehicle price on both sides. A bank loan makes you a cash buyer and gives you bargaining power on price; zero per cent dealer finance often costs you the discount you would otherwise have got. Compare the total amount including deposit and balloon payment.

What should I bear in mind with balloon financing?

That there is a large payment at the end which has to come from somewhere. The low repayment in the meantime is not an advantage but a postponement. Before signing, decide whether you want to pay the balloon payment, sell the car or refinance — and what that follow-up financing will cost.
